New curricula needs new assessment tools - Video Assignment for VIU PBED Assessment for Education 2016

Questions:
1)What are your feelings on the concept of “no grades” assessment?
2)What have you experienced in the way students in your practicums are assessed?
3)How do you think the incorporation of technology will affect our ability to assess student’s learning?
4)What do you think some of the barriers are to a change in assessment being implemented in the Nanaimo School District?

Further Research:
1)There are 10 School Districts in BC that are actively practicing fundamental shifts in assessment practices. Courtenay/Comox, Surrey, and Gold Trail are all good examples of changes. Research one of these districts’ web presence to explore how assessment is viewed and managed in the classroom. Will this research affect your job search in any way?

2)Check out www.Freshgrade.ca to view the platform that Surrey is using in leiu of report cards. What are your thoughts/feelings/impressions of this system?

3)JordanTinney is currently the superintendent of Surrey, but prior to that he was the superintendent to Courtenay/Comox and has spearheaded the move towards no grade assessment and electronic reporting in both of these regions. Check out his blog and read at least 3 of his articles on various topics. How is strong leadership and vision linked to change? http://www.jordantinney.org/

What an articulate and insightful presentation, Karina! Indeed, implementing the new curriculum currently feels as if we're pouring new wine into old wine bottles. We need radically new ways of performing assessment. e-Portfolios are definitely one of the approaches I see many school districts heading towards and for older grades this seems most appropriate, especially considering the ubiquitous use of home and school computers. In my kindergarten class, however, a hard-copy or paper-copy portfolio is proving to be extremely beneficial. Students often choose to look over their portfolio (a binder containing evidence of learning, work samples etc.) during quiet reading time. The intrinsic motivation lighting up students' eyes as they pour over their progress is undeniable and extremely rewarding. Parents also love being able to take the portfolio home as a keepsake at the end of the year. Anyway, something for the primary grades to keep in mind. Thanks for this delightful commentary! BN
